Regions and Terroirs

Nestled between latitudes 45° and 47° N, Slovenia is a land of remarkable geographical and climatic diversity. Slovenian vineyards thrive across three distinct wine regions - Podravje, Posavje, and Primorska - each shaped by unique mesoclimates and natural influences.

In the northeast, Podravje, and in the southeast, Posavje, enjoy a moderate-to-cool continental climate, balanced by the cooling touch of the Alps and the warmth of the Pannonian Plain. Primorska region is situated to the west basks in a moderate-to-warm Mediterranean climate.

Podravje  - The Homeland of Slovenian Sparkling Wine - Penina - and Aromatic Whites

Podravje, located in northeastern Slovenia along the Austrian and Hungarian borders, is the country's second-largest wine region, covering approximately 6,100 hectares.

Named after the Drava River, this region is best known as the birthplace of Slovenian sparkling wine Penina, as well as for its refined aromatic whites and award-winning sweet wines.

Covering around 2,400 hectares, Posavje may be lesser known, but it is rich in tradition, local character, and quietly rising quality, especially in sparkling wine production.

Primorska - Slovenia’s Warmest and Most Dynamic Wine Region

Primorska is Slovenia’s warmest wine-growing region, shaped by the sun-drenched hills and the steady influence of the nearby Mediterranean Sea.

Its wines are as diverse as its landscapes: from coastal slopes to high plateaus, and its rise to prominence has been nothing short of remarkable.
